帮助9-11年级的学生找到自己的声音, lead for the greater good and put their learnings into practice, Roland Park Country School recently rolled out a new program called R.E.D. Do.)块. R.E.D. 块是中心链 领导与创业研究所, which equips our 上学校 students with robust offerings designed to embolden them to create positive change in the world and help them consider, 凭借他们众多的优势, 他们打算做出什么样的改变啊, 以及他们如何开始将自己的想法变为现实.
在R.E.D. 块, every student is involved in activities that require deep-thinking, 探索和创造性地解决问题,培养韧性, 促进健康的冒险, 培养激情和好奇心, 提高目的性.
“We are always looking for intentional and meaningful ways to encourage our next generation of women leaders,卡洛琳·布拉蒂说, 校长. “R.E.D. 块 shows our students what is possible and how their actions can truly change the world.”
九年级R.E.D. 块 builds foundational understandings of what it means to be an engaged member of society and helps students identify and leverage tools, 资源, 对社区产生影响的模型和责任. 可持续发展目标,包括17项全球目标 联合国大会 to achieve a better and more sustainable future for the next generations. 可持续发展目标 are the guiding spirit behind much of the work we do and will steer our vision as this program evolves,彼得·梅索普洛斯说, 领导与创业总监.
在春天, there will be a culminating action project where students will use their new knowledge and the U.N. 可持续发展目标 to impact a specific community issue in 巴尔的摩 City.
在10个th 和11th 成绩, students chose from a wide range of elective-style offerings that incorporate the tenets of leadership and entrepreneurship. 10 .主题th 年级研讨会是“创业心态”,” with seven courses offered to research and implement solutions to social problems, 包括可持续消费和粮食体系, 全球外交, conflict resolution and citizenship and debate (see below for full list of courses). 块 courses are offered under the theme “Innovating for the Greater Good,” where students work in small groups to research and refine solutions to respond to a specific need they have identified in the world.
有两个R.E.D. 块 classes in each 10 day cycle and each class runs for an hour and a half in the afternoon. 虽然期望很高, students are alleviated of the stress of homework and the traditional high-stakes grading system, 哪一种方式能让我们真正深入地学习和参与. 这些课程通常还包括实地考察, guest speakers and deep reflections on the topics the students are learning. Oletha DeVane, whose work is currently on exhibit at the 巴尔的摩 Museum of Art, 来到最近的R.E.D. 块 class on 社会正义与装置艺术 class to talk to students about their work and provide constructive feedback.
R.E.D. 块 encourages students to be the drivers of their own passions and find a sense of purpose. 承认每个学习者的个性, students can lean towards options that interest them to take a deeper dive into applied academics.
“So far, I have really enjoyed every component of this class,” said Isabel McFarland, a 10th grader who is taking a seminar on 可持续消费, which collaborates with the second graders – the only cross-divisional course offered this semester. 在这门课上, the students are working in small task forces to create new signage and education about waste management to the RPCS community to encourage responsible consumption. “I also love how we write a blog reflecting on our class after each seminar. 这让我能够真正思考我们工作的影响.”
通过R.E.D. Promoting a collaborative spirit through project-based learning and letting the students guide their explorations to learn more authentically involves a degree of risk-taking and cultivates new skill sets in teaching.
“作为教育者, we’ve struggled with how we can create time a teenager’s life to explore something in-depth,Carla Spawn-van Berkum说, Assistant 校长 for 学者 and teacher of the 建设性的合作 course. “This new curriculum is a mindset shift for all of us and the program is still evolving to weave in both the student and faculty voices and choices. There are so many ways for this to grow and that is truly exciting.”
作为进化的一部分, students and faculty members have been surveyed to anonymously share their thoughts about the new program, 包括格式, 学校时间表的长度和整体变化, 并对项目的发展提出建设性的建议.
“我希望在今年年底, both students and faculty will walk away surprised at what they’ve come to understand,彼得说. “And I also hope that the school community will be exposed to the particular worlds that our students have explored.”
